Healthcare institutions have an obligation to provide an effective resuscitation service and to ensure that their staff receives training and regular updates for maintaining a level of competence appropriate to each individual’s employed role.
This requires appropriate training in resuscitation.
Failure to provide an effective service is a failure in duty of care that is a clinical risk, contravenes the principles of clinical governance, and has implications for clinical negligence.
With changing times, it will be expected for all healthcare professionals involved at any level of patient care to be BLS/ACLS certified, be they junior doctors or nurses.
It is also a mandatory requirement for accredition to NABH/JCI that all health care staff be BLS certified and those dealing with critically ill patients within their scope of practice such as Casualty, ICU, ambulances be ACLS certified.
The ‘casualty is the window to a hospital’. With this in mind, it is recommended that all junior doctors involved in casualty work and who attend ambulance calls, should be trained in providing emergency medical services. They should not function merely as ‘telephone operators’ , conveying patient details to the consultant on phone, unable to make any real attempt at patient assessment and initial stabilization.
CIRI firmly believes that if appropriately trained, RMOs are a major asset to the smooth running of a hospital. The ACTT course and Patient Transfer Course is carefully planned to provide a knowledge towards safe and smooth running of the hospital. A well equipped ambulance does not provide a high degree of patient care, unless manned by a doctor with a well equipped mind. Our training imparts immediate assessment and stabilization training to RMOs as well important basics such as ECG reading, so that hospital casualty is prepared to appropriately receive a particular patient, be it a RTA or a myocardial infarction and be an indispensable asset to the hospital.
